How to register for the VTC exam, step by step

The whole procedure is online. These are the real steps, in the order you have to do them.

1. 1. Check whether you are exempt

   First of all: if you have already worked as a VTC driver, you may not have to sit the exam at all. You would save the exam, the fee and weeks of waiting. See the exemption conditions.

2. 2. Check that you meet the requirements

   • A class B driving licence held for at least 2 years.
   • Being registered on the payroll of the company holding the authorisations.
   • No contagious illness and no physical or mental impediment.
   • No conviction for offences against sexual freedom.

3. 3. Get your electronic ID

   You need Cl@ve, a digital certificate or the DNIe. This is the step that stops most people, and nothing moves without it. Start here.

4. 4. Pay the fee (31,38 €)

   You pay it before filling in the application, because the form will ask you for the receipt. Download it or take a screenshot the moment you pay.

5. 5. Fill in the application on the government website

   Sign in with your electronic ID, complete the details, tick the two required boxes and attach the fee receipt with the « Adjuntar documentación » button. Go to the official website .

6. 6. Sign and send

   Click « Firmar y enviar la solicitud » and wait for the confirmation message. If it does not appear, the application has not been filed.

7. 7. Watch your Cuenta Virtual — this is where people get lost

   The administration will not call you and will not send you a letter. The summons arrives only in your Cuenta Virtual at the Comunidad de Madrid, and it is up to you to go and look. If you do not, you can lose your sitting without ever knowing.

8. 8. Pass… and then APPLY for the licence

   Passing is not enough. A second procedure exists for applying for the licence to be issued, with its own fee of 20,37 €, its own photo and its own deadline. Licence issue procedure .
